Education and Training

Dr. MacFarlane graduated from Otago Medical School in New Zealand. She received postgraduate training in general surgery in New Zealand and later at Massachusetts General Hospital and Ohio State University.

Following a dermatology fellowship Dr MacFarlane completed a dermatology residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. She then went on to receive specialty fellowship training in Mohs micrographic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, focusing on the treatment of complex and high-risk skin cancers.

Leadership & Academic Appointments

Dr. MacFarlane has held numerous leadership roles throughout her 30 year history as a Mohs surgeon. After her Mohs fellowship, she joined the faculty at Oklahoma Health Sciences Center as Director of Mohs and Dermatologic Surgery. She has spent the last 22 years at MD Anderson, where she served as Director of the Mohs Unit and held appointments as Professor of Dermatology and Head and Neck Surgery. During this time, she also served as Director of the Procedural Dermatology Fellowship, helping train the next generation of Mohs surgeons.

Research, Publications, & Lectures

Dr. MacFarlane is a Diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology, an Associate of the American College of Mohs Surgery, and a fellow in the American Academy of Dermatology. She is a member of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgeons and the Women’s Dermatologic Society. The editor of a textbook on skin cancer and the author of numerous papers. Dr. MacFarlane is an active lecturer both nationally and internationally.
